Planning.  It is critical to fully plan the migration to the Cloud from both a business and project perspective.  You must fully understand your business objectives for moving to the Cloud and what the target market and product mix will be.  The existing software product must be assessed for suitability (architecture, scalability, security, usability).  Your existing skill base should be analyzed to ensure the proper expertise to implement and support the new technologies

      Architecture.  An architectural plan is as important as a business plan.  How will multi-tenancy - virtualization, common database / application, complete segregation - be supported?  How will scalability and manageability be ensured?  What parts of the current software product will be leveraged, and what technical approach will be used?  How do you assure that the deployment is secure?

      Process.  It may be necessary to restructure current development and service processes.  Tools may need to be more fully integrated.  Processes for requirements analysis, change management, development, and testing will need to be flexible and responsive.  Outsourcer integration may need to be considered.  And your customer service model will likely need change, to provide more responsive, round-the-clock service with robust, integrated administration tools, including support for onboarding new customers.

      Requirements.  The requirements for the Cloud product must be well articulated:  Will the entire functionality of the current product be supported, or only a subset?  How will the user interface need to be modernized?  What additional functions are required to support the expanded market?

      Infrastructure Migration.  In order to fully leverage the benefits of the Cloud model, it may be necessary and/or cost-effective to migrate certain parts of the current product’s infrastructure to a more flexible and maintainable architecture.  This may involve switching out middleware and/or database management platforms, or may involve a wholesale upgrade to implement a Service-Oriented Architecture.
